Greetings from Pack 391

Thank you for visiting our website. Our goal is to keep you informed of our activities, notify you of changes, and provide information on our Pack. Did you know that Scouts are more likely to graduate from college and pursue post-graduate work than non-scouts?

If you are new to Scouting we recommend you view this brief video:

Pack 391 Offical Pine Wood Derby Rules

Pinewood Derby Race Rules

Scouts class:
  • The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
  • The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
  • The overall height of the car shall not exceed 6 inches.
  • The car must have 1 ¾ inches clearance between the wheels.
  • The car must have 3/8” clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track.
  • The car shall not exceed 5.0 ounces.
  • The official race scale that is used at car check-in shall be considered final.
  • While not disallowed, the use of lead weights is discouraged.
  • The car must have at least 4 wheels.
  • Use of the pack-supplied Pinewood Derby car kits is encouraged, but other car kits are allowed.
  • Only official BSA Pinewood Derby wheels may be used.  You should be able to see raised lettering on the outside of the wheel with "BSA" on one side and "PINEWOOD DERBY" on the other.  The wheels included with the pack-supplied Pinewood Derby car kit are fine, and the wheels on many other car kits are fine.  However, some wheels are not.  If you have any question, please contact your den leadership.
  • Very few modifications to the wheels are allowed.  In general, anything that would remove material from the wheels is not allowed.  You are allowed to:
    • Use sandpaper or lathe to true out-of-round wheels
    • Add material like glue or fingernail polish to the inside of the wheels to balance them.
  • Axles must be nail-like with a head.  "Through" axles that span the width of the car are not allowed.
  • Wheel bearings, bushings, or washers are not allowed.
  • Axles may be altered, polished, or lubricated (dry lubricant only).
  • The car must be freewheeling.  No starting devices, motors, or any moving parts besides the wheels.
  • The front of the car must not extend past the center of the front of the car where the gate will hold the car at race start.
  • All cars must be dry of paint, glues and able to be handled by official or the will be disqualified until corrected.
  • Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race committee members can touch it.
  • If the car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged, the racer shall have 5 minutes to make repairs.
  • Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete. The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these rules.
Rookie class:
The rules for the Rookie class are the same as for Scouts class.

Adult class:
The rules for the Adult class are the same as for Scouts class.

Unlimited class:
The rules for the Unlimited class are far more relaxed:
  • The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
  • The overall height of the car shall not exceed 6 inches.
  • The car must have 1 ¾ inches clearance between the wheels.
  • The car must have 3/8” clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track.
  • No explosives or setting the track on fire.

The most important rules are to have fun, be a good sport, and cheer for the racers.
